This is my story. I’ve waited a long time to tell it, but too many people are letting others write their story for them. I met some of those people; once I was one of those people.

There’s an old saying; “Keep doing the same thing the same way, and you get the same results.” I remember saying that to a group of kids who were living with some grown-up responsibilities.

Then I asked a question no one had: What are you going to do differently? Silence; you don’t often combine a room full of teenagers and silence, but that day was different.

They knew my story; they knew why I was doing what I was doing for them, but they needed more than my story and a motivational talk. They needed to know how to turn their lives around.

Together, on that day so long ago, I paid it forward.
